  • Powder SLS vs. liquid SLS

I’ve been given multiple suppliers for SLS. Some suppliers have it in liquid form while others have it in powder. I’ve been told that the %grade is the difference between the two. If this is true, I still don’t know what that means.

    if it’s a powder, it’s concentrated (typically 95% w/w)

    if it’s a liquid, it’s a dilute solution (typically 27% w/w)

I should have made my question clearer. Is the powder being diluted with only water or are other chemicals involved?

Even better. The powder is a pain to work with. I am sure some can tell stories. The liquid is easier but be sure to keep an eye on the total solids, especially from supplier to supplier.

^^^ The above. I had all sorts of mad failures in formulation early on because I failed to realise that there were different grades.

the powder usually has some water in it as a remnant from the manufacturing process

A number of the liquid SLS versions use alcohol to reduce the thickness of their blends. Otherwise, you can’t make a flowable blend much above 30% SLS.
