  • Polysorbate 80 with hemp extract and water emulsion help

Posted by steve-7895 on November 8, 2024 at 11:36 am

I am working on some drink formulas and have been running into some issues with stabilizing the emulsion. The hemp extract requires heat to keep it liquid. I am doing a 1/1 ratio with hemp extract and vegetable oil to break down the extract so it remains liquid at room temp. I am then adding the polysorbate 80 at a 1/3 ratio of total mixture and also at 1/2 total mixture. I am then trying to put that mixture into water. 2.4g mix to 1 gallon of water. or 3.2g mix to 1 gallon of water. It seems to work in production, but after it settles, the mix seems to rise to the top. I am using electric mixer to blend it. I usually use the mixer for about 1 min. Not sure if I need to add more time or change the mixing speed or potentially add more of the polysorbate. All help appreciated. Thank you.

@steve-7895 you are manufacturing a microemulsion here - nice idea - where the disperse phase is ~0.10%. The use of FG Tween 80 is a good place to start but you may need to team that with a FG polyglyceryl ester such as polyglcyeryl-6 oleate or polyglceryl-10 dioleate to co-emulsify both the CBD and the veg oil to a stable state. Many microemulsions in the academic literature employ that combination. Also bear in mind not all veggie triacylglcyerides (TAG) are same in places such as this. Use a less polar one having lower polyunsaturated (linoleic, linolenic) fatty acids.

Thanks for the advice. I had some vg/pg here. Did a little tinkering with ratios and rpms and found a great balance.

You are definitely in need of a higher ratio of polysorbate 80:lipids. Try 5:1 and see how it turns out. Adding a food grade rheology stabilizer might help too. Carageenan gum comes to mind.

Higher concentration of the Polysorbate 80 gave a really bitter taste to the mix. The current blend I am using still leaves a little foam on top of the settled drink, but when you shake it up, there is no residue. I am interested in making this perfect without any foaming if possible. I will try adding the other recommendations to see if I can make it better. Thank you
