  • Piroctone Olamine… how to dissolve it?

Posted by Clondono on October 10, 2022 at 3:25 pm

    Hi.

I am currently working on an antidandruff shampoo formula and I want to use Piroctone Olamine (0.75%) but it has been difficult to dissolve it. I did some research and found that it is soluble in surfactant solutions, but I tried to do it and it is not working. The surfactants I am using are Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Cocamide DEA. As well, I am using Polysorbate 80 to solve some oils and I even notice that it makes the precipipate more noticeable. Thanks in advance!!

As the objective is to deposit the stuff on the scalp - are you sure you want a solution?

    I want an homogenous shampoo.

@PhilGeis if it is a leave on scalp product, does it matter if Piroctone Olamine or another active is in solution form?

Deposition is the objective - from solution or suspension.  Do not know why a solution is required to achieve a homogenous product.

It is not a leave on product… it is a shampoo.

I don’t mind if my formula is cloudy. I just want piroctone olamine to be well mixed and homogenous in my shampoo.

    You may be oversimplifying.
How do you expect to ensure the product works?  It is not sufficient to formulate with an active - enough active has to be deposited with enough coverage to be effective.
Assume you’re not in the US.

Yes, I think I get it… I must be looking for coarcevation instead of solution, right? Thanks so much. I’ll try to do that instead.

I would love to find out the answer to this, as I wasn’t able to get it to “hold” in ethanol (as part of a scalp solution I was trying to make).  Contacting the supplier didn’t help other than their suggestion to add it too a pre-formulated shampoo.  That worked, but I would still like to get an answer to my original question.

Should be soluble in aq alcohol (~10%) solution.  pH should be around neutral to sl alkaline.
