• PH METER

    Hi all,

It’s almost impossible to get a descent PH meter (for
Emulsions) here in the UK without breaking the bank.
Does anyone know where I can get one for or less than £200.

The test strips aren’t cutting it and I understand that the pocket meters for
water/aquaponics are not accurate with emulsions…. currently using this one .

I read somewhere that this is best used by watering down the product 50/50 …hmmmm.

My product should be 4.9 exactly.

My consultant chemist has recommended a Mettler Toledo which
    is NOT affordable right now.

     Thanks in advance.

    EBay.
By the way, I recall a member recently ruined her meter with cationic liquids. It occurs to me that it may be (it’s broken anyway) possible to rescue it by soaking it in a strong base, max strength KOH for instance.

    Wow. Extreme markups on Amazon.

I’m a big fan of this meter:

It’s more than your budget, but I think it’s worth a look.

On the subject of pH meters ruined by cationic detergents, the same can happen with other detergent types as well. The detergent coats the very thin glass of the electrode and renders it effectively useless.

When I was working, I was introduced to pH meters that worked on a different principle, that is a semiconductor probe using an ISFET transistor to measure the pH.

We did buy one of these (from Sigma Aldrich) and it seemed to work OK but, I only have very limited experience in this area as I retired shortly afterwards.

A quick Gooooogle show that Amazon, both UK and US, stock Hach brand ISFET pH meters so, it may be worth a tryout.

@BobzchemistThanks for the recommendation on the Hanna pH meter. I had money set aside for equipment and I ordered one. Got it yesterday (overnighted) and it is great, especially for the price,

@Microformulation : Funny just got my EDGE last week…:)
Hanna recommended a conical tip for creams and lotions. Anyone tried this?

@David d I just replaced the electrode on my Mettler pH meter after 3 years and no joking, I could have bought an entire Edge for what the electrode alone cost and still gone out for a nice meal. I may order the conical electrode to try since it is still affordable.

I mounted my Edge to the wall and also ran it into my server with the USB port. Never got my Mettler to do that.
