  • Pearlizer and thickener in shampoo

Posted by Rencelj on March 1, 2014 at 3:50 am

Hello to all. I am trying to thick my shampoo but i would not like to use salt (irritating to eyes) and would like to use some other alternative. My ph range is 5-5,5. I am using usual combo of sles, betaine, decy glycoside and coco glycoside.
I would also like to ask if there is any “natural” pearlizer for shampoo? Few monts ago i heared something bout stearic acid to be pearlizer, but not sure if i heared it good.

    Best regards

Stearic acid will work in creams and lotions, not so sure about shampoo.  You can use EGDS (ethoxydiglycol) don’t think this is very natural but not sure.

Thickening I would use the salt.  Most likely getting shampoo in your eyes even without salt is going to be irritating.  You can try some of the carbopol products like Aqua SF.

I have sodium carbopol , but i found it hard to keep it stable with ph. Will try it soon and will let you know. Any more ideas?

For natural pearlizing check out Euperlan Green by BASF…for natural thickener, Glucamate CCO from Lubrizol

If you want to keep a cold process, you can try a Quickpearl II from lubrizol or Euperlans from BASF. The EGDS is already melted in I believe SLES and betaine which is already in your formula. This will save with time during batching.
Salt would be your cheapest thickener. I agree with using Carbopol Aqua SF. I would suggest using SF-2. It is made for lower pH systems and will enhance the pearl.
