    Hello

Can anyone give me some guidance on the possibility of making skincare cosmetics that do not contain palm oil at all. I’ve been told by one cosmetics chemist that it’s virtually impossible but would like another opinion on this. There seem to be a few non palm oil products in Australia in particular - I’m assuming because the deforestation for palm oil plantations in Borneo/Sumatra, etc is on their doorstep but I’m not sure how realistic their claims are. There also seems to be some controversy around the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) regarding how ethical the companies that subscribe to it actually are so ideally a product that contains no palm oil at all would be better. I’m not a cosmetic chemist but would like to investigate the possibility of producing a product like this, naturally with the expertise of a cosmetic chemist. If it’s an impossibility however, or would be completely out of the market’s reach cost wise, then I will need to reconsider. Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

you might be able to make an absolutely palm oil free product if it had nothing in it but water, silicones, synthetic polymers and mineral-based materials

Coconut is a type of palm, no more use fundamentally than the oil palm.

As @Bill_Toge has mentioned above if you want to create products that are based on synthetic and petroleum based ingredients it can be done but if you are concerned about palm oil I am assuming that you would be trying to create a more “natural” type product.

Developing cosmetics that are palm free is certainly much more difficult and definitely more expensive than using palm based ingredients especially if you want to create emulsified products such as creams and lotions. Making anhydrous (balm type products) products can be done relatively easily without using palm oil based ingredients but this severely limits the types of products that you can develop.

There are definitely a number of businesses incorrectly making palm free claims in Australia. Some of these are due to smaller companies relying on information from one supplier that incorrectly claimed that an emulsifier was palm oil free. This supplier no longer sells this emulsifier.
