I’d like folks to keep the following cautions in mind, for those of you tempted to formulate this type of product.

    1) In the spectrum of formulating cosmetics, formulating color cosmetics/makeup is the hardest kind of formulation.

    2) In the spectrum of formulating color cosmetics/makeup, the most difficult kind of product to formulate is mascara. The second most difficult kind of product to formulate is solid or liquid lipstick.Even professional cosmetic chemists who specialize in color products have trouble formulating lipstick - it is very difficult and time-consuming.

    3) In terms of consumer safety, products that might get in a consumers eye, and products that might get in a consumers mouth are subject to the highest level of scrutiny by government agencies and product liability lawyers. A mistake made in the formulation of one of these products could cause permanent damage, blindness, or even death. This is not an area to play around with if you don’t already know what you’re doing. The level of possible harm that could be done is orders of magnitude higher than what could happen with a badly formulated soap, shampoo or moisturizer.

    4) A great many of the cosmetic grade ingredients that are perfectly safe to use in soaps, shampoos, moisturizers, etc. are NOT safe to use in lip products, or taste nasty, or both. Again, if you don’t already know what you’re doing, this is an extremely bad area to experiment in.

I appreciate tips like this. I only formulate color cosmetics for personal use, but do blog about what I make. Nice to know this formulation is the hardest kind.
