    Dear All,

We are a cosmetics manufacturing unit in India are looking for an expert Formulator who can help us formulate a hair smoothening system. We are comfortable working with overseas consultants.

Can someone guide how we can go ahead and find a good consultant for the project? If you are interested, phase do in your profile at pranavatpodar@gmail.com.

My biggest dilemma is to find an expert who has previously worked out has sufficient skills to formulate the products ( treatment, shampoo, conditioner, etc)

I haven’t come across a true product in this line until now, formaldehyde/or its precursors are used in one form or other under the disguise of this and that. It is a very profitable line, I have seen people making tons of money but the ethics are completely missing.
Or maybe I haven’t been looking in the right direction where the hair can be straightened without the use of formaldehyde release during treatment.

@Chemist77 - how are the ethics completely missing? If companies are using formaldehyde to cross-link the keratin protein to hair for straightening and they aren’t exceeding allowed limits, what’s the problem with that?

I agree there are companies that have used way more formaldehyde than is allowed but this doesn’t mean products with only the allowable amount are unethical.

    I’m curious about your perspective.

There seems to be a dead end when it comes to straightening hair with maximum effect without the presence of formaldehyde during hot ironing. There have been few new things  but I am not very sure how they perform comparatively. The dosage recommended by FDA compared to actual being present is always different in most of these products. I was referring to those cases where they have made wrong claims related to formaldehyde and which are one too many. I agree with you that there are products those follow FDA guidelines and completely ethical but they are either too mild for such treatments or not too visible. The customers expect a 6 month effect after one such treatment and I am not sure how that would be possible by following the legal limit. I would be interested to know of such products which are equally effective while sticking to FDA guidelines and hence I stated above that maybe I have not looked in the right direction.

    I agree
Using formaldehyde at or below the maximum allowed concentrations yields no straightening whatsoever.

There are some fromaldehyde-free patents and formulas, but it ain’t clear that they’re any better to thioglycolic acid hair relaxers.

@PRANAV9 maybe it’s better to stick to existing thioglycolic acid formulations, and just add a conditioner to reduce hair damage, either added in the straightening fomulation, or as after treament.
i.e. I always wondered if BTMS if compatible with thioglycolic acid. At the end only experimentation can tell.
