  • Natural preservative replacement for Germall Plus

    Hi,

I made an emulsion with Heliosoft/Siligel. The pH is 5.25-5.5.

I have always used Germall Plus in my emulsions, so they have been 99.5% natural. I love Germall Plus, it’s solid!

If I were to replace Germall with a natural broad spectrum preservative, what are some options that people have gotten good results with?

My Contract Manufacturer is suggesting Linatural MBS-1 ( (Propanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Sorbate) or Troycare FE01(Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate and Phenoxyethanol).

I have heard not so good things about Linatural, and I am not familiar with Troycare.

What are your thoughts/suggestions based on your experience?

    Thank you so much!

Of those two, Troycare sounds preferred. At least it has some reasonable preservatives in it.  Linatural…not so much.  Those are preservative “boosters”.

@Perry Thank you! I would prefer not to swap Germall Plus, but I am concerned about the bad rep formaldehyde releasers have for the average customer

@Perry Is there another option you would recommend aside from Troycare?

I’m kinda Coocoo for cocoa puffs…but here is the program I use…and my crap last for years and years.

    E 9010
    +
    TSGD aka GLDA
    +
    Hydroxyacetophenone
    +
4.8 pH (and 5.2 when using HydroVance)

A nice jag of glycols, especially Pentylene glycol, but also a splash of 1,2-hexanediol, caprylyl glycol.
    +
phenethyl alcohol (as several of my products are creams).

As you can see….the hurdle approach is used…except for the creams…: where I drop the ball with packaging. :)

So my big recommendation for you…would be lower your pH to 4.5 to 4.8, as you are almost to the safer zone. That will take you miles.  Never hurts to toss a kiss of TEC in there as well…just to keep everything minding their P’s and Q’s.

    Aloha.

@Graillotion Wowza! Thanks for the secret sauce recipe ;-). Never would I have put all of those things together. What does TSGD aka GLDA stand for?

    That is a natural chelate.

GLDA is  biodegrable not natural.  Synthetic product of glutamic acid.

Where do you get yours from? Do you know any resellers? I can’t find it in quantities less than 45 lbs and that is much more than I need.
