  • Natural Formula for Hair Wax Stick

    Hello,

I am not a chemist or formulator however, I have been reading through the discussion posts and thought with everyone’s knowledge that someone would be able to help me create a formula or provide general tips/rules for an all-natural hair wax stick that has a good hold and a long shelf life. I know some of the ingredients I want to use but when it comes to the preservatives, surfactants, and emulsifiers I get kind of lost. If anyone has any tips or general guidance that would be amazing.

    Thank you,

    Dys

I’ve never made any hair sticks specifically, but i have my fair share in hair care product making. My best suggestions for this product would be:

Emulsifier: BTMS-50. This ingredient gives a really beautiful conditioning effect on the hair. A little more pricey than regular e-wax, but really makes a huge difference on your product.

Hardener: Cetyl Alcohol. I find that combining cetyl alchol and BTMS-50 makes for a beautiful hair product. I also find Cetyl Alcohol to be more luxurious compared to stearic acid and has no waxy scent.

Depending on the main aim of this hair stick, i recommend adding a suitable active to add to the quality of the product. You may explore Polyquaternium 7 or Polyquaternium 10 as a common hair active. And don’t forget to add some sort of protein (rice protein / soy protein / silk / etc) because this really kicks it up a notch.

And if your formulation needs some sort of oil, to keep it light, i recommend using silicones (cyclomethicone / dimethicone / etc) instead of natural oils because natural oils can be quite heavy on the hair. Not that you cant use any, go nuts on experimenting with ingredients as much as you want. But just sharing a pro tip that natural oils are pretty darn heavy for hair care and use very VERY sparingly if you must include them in your formulation.

    Hope this helps! 🙂

<div>I’m unsure what kind of “hair stick” was being discussed before (polyquat-10, polyquat-7 and proteins are only for water-borne hair products) but here is the original one, which I had a hand in creating. Over 25 years on the market and still going! Go for it.</div>
