    Hi,

I’m working on a low cost conditioner formulation.
Its as follows and require advise/comments on how to optimize.
Its a very basic due to keeping costs down
    Centrimonium Chloride 3%
    Ceto Stearyl Alcohol 3%
    Stearic Acid 2%
    Polysorbate 60 0.05%
    Mineral Oil 0.5%
    Preservative
    Parfum

    Thanks

@Cherma I’d remove Stearic acid, increase Ceto stearyl alcohol to 4%, add some Behentrimoniun chloride (0.5%, for instance), and increase your Mineral oil to 1% (in case you’re not willing to add a silicone). Test the sample with consumers, to have their feedback.

Like @ketchito sez: DEL that stearic acid. (Why do so many use this incorrectly?) ADD more Tween 60 (0.5 - 1.0%) and mineral oil (3.0 - 5.0 %) and you’ll have something there at low cost. Thicken with NaCl if needed. BTW, Cetearyl alcohol & Tween (Polysorbate) 60 may be obtained as the legendary combo product “Emulsifying Wax NF” for added cost savings. There are many cheaper clones of this out there too.

To explain it a bit further -
Stearic acid = anionic (negatively charged), Cetrimonium Chloride = cationic (positively charged) - they are going to cling to each other as magnets and won’t work.

Also please check your local regulatory limits for Cetrimonium Chloride - In EU it’s 2.5% for wash off products.

Dont use stearic, add more cationic surfactant (BTMS/TEGOAMID/VARISOFT BT, add more oil, add cationic polymer ( cheap like PQ7), and adjust pH arround 4 using citric, malic or formic acid,  you will get low cost conditioner with soft, silky hair result
