I am working on replicating a discontinued leave-in detangling and conditioner spray that works wonders for my 4C type hair. The issue that I am having, is figuring out the amount of fatty alcohols to add to the formula to where it stays sprayable and not thicken into a cream.

Below is the attached ingredients of the discontinued product and a formula that has similar ingredients that I plan to use as a baseline. The baseline formula comes out as a cream.

The ingredients I have on hand are:

    - Aloe Juice

    - Betaine

    - Honey Quat

    - BTMS-50

    - Cetrimonium Chloride

    - Fractionated Coconut Oil

    - Glycerin

    - Hydrolyzed Protein

    - Panthenol

    - PE 9010

Oh my god I came here with almost the same question. I have tried so many things and it keeps separating.

    What I’ve tried:

    A.

    82% water

    8% rosemary hydrosol

    1% snow mushroom

    1% Irish Sea moss extract

    1% keratin protein

    1% honeyquat

    3% oil

    1% btms50

    1% cetyreal alcohol

    1% dpanthenol

    B.

    82% water

    8% rosemary hydrosol

    1% snow mushroom

    1% Irish Sea moss extract

    1% keratin protein

    1% honeyquat

    2% oil

    2% btms25

    1% cetyreal alcohol

    1% dpanthenol

    C.

    82% water

    8% rosemary hydrosol

    2% snow mushroom extract

    2% Irish sea moss extract

    2% keratin protein

    1% honeyquat

    1% btmc (behetrimonium chloride)

    1% cetyreal alcohol

    1% dpanthenol

C works the best, the other two break I believe due to the percentages being too low :/ if I do 2% btms and 2% cetearyl it emulsifies and feels great but it’s near solid like a cream. I see so many thin formulas on the market using these conditioning agents and emulsifiers I do not understand how they do it.

Even some proteins and perfumes so for emulsion it Evry ingredient can change the viscosity of your product even dramatically with very low level this is a results of my some experiences.
