I recently purchased some guar hydroxypropyl trimonium chloride from Making Cosmetics. The guar began thickening  the water even before I had added the citric acid. I decided to test the pH using a strip and it was already somewhere between 6.5 and 7.Upon doing some research I realized that there are different Jaguars. I think the one I have seems to be jaguar  C13-S based upon the low pH and it hydrating so quickly.  I purchased it to use in a conditioner and I am wondering if it will be as effective. The one I previously purchased was from lotion crafter and it seems like there’s is from Ashland . Also which of the Jaguars would you recommend for use in conditioners. I will do my own experimenting of course but wanted to know if it really makes much of a difference.

In my opinion, there is not a whole lot of difference. They might feel slightly different (which most consumers won’t notice) - however, some are clear while others are translucent, which is what most people will notice.

I think that “S” may stand for surface-treated if memory serves, that’s why it hydrated without you needing to acidify slightly as usual. Like all cationic polymers it comes down to charge-mass ratio. I’ve found C-17 to be the most efficient all-around workhorse of the Jaguar cationic guar series.
