The following quoted comments were posted in a Facebook formulating group, but is this “mommy blogger” lore? I have not experimented with w/o emulsions much yet, but I plan to. I personally don’t like pouring oil phase into water phase due to the fact they the oil phase solidifies quickly and a portion hardens onto the side of the vessel and so far I have never had an unstable emulsion

“For an O/W emulsion, you must pour the oil phase into the water phase. This is because the water phase is larger than the oil phase.

The only time you pour the water into the oil phase is if you are making a W/O emulsion “

Said commenter has previously advised both accurate and inaccurate information, and researching this particular topic has led me down a rabbit hole of conflicting advice.

Typical process (O/W)…is to slowly add heated oil phase to heated water phase under light stirring…once combined then commence with shear. Most every mfg will have a clause for the reverse…as simply production set-ups might dictate the opposite. Almost without exception those will state combine the phases without stirring, and once combined….then commence with stirring until mixed, followed by shear.

These steps…depending on formula make-up….will generally help with the elimination of phase inversions.

Ummmh…..why do people still listen to those that have been proven to disseminate lore? If it were me…one ‘lore’ and you’re out. 🙂

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, I think I will disregard this person’s advice moving forward. I was being optimistic, I guess! ????

Ignorance is an all encompassing lifestyle choice. It rarely changes.

      Good luck in your journeys.

FYI…. When it comes to mommy blogger lore…. I have come to the conclusion….90+% is some form of bad….either partially incorrect, incorrect, or grossly incorrect. Not good odds….in fact just doing the opposite of what the lore slingers say….you will garner reasonably good odds of success. ????
