Is there a preservative in this?
Posted by Margaret on December 2, 2024 at 6:07 pmAqua, Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, Cocamide MIPA, Decyl-glucoside, Cocamidopropyl, Vegetable glycerin, Propanediol and Hydroxyacetophenone, Sodium Chloride, Xanthan gum, Mentha arvensis, Lavendula angustifolia, Polyether sorbitan monolaurate, Citric acid
I don’t recognize a preservative in this. This little company (Mint Cleaning Products) went on a TV show in Canada called ‘Dragon’s Den’. It’s like the ‘Shark Tank’ in the U.S. They received $425,000 plus they need to give 10% to the investors of the Dragon’s Den.

No, there is not a preservative listed. In fact, none of the products on their website seem to list a preservative, and all of their INCI’s are written incorrectly.

What type of product is it supposed to be, a shampoo or body wash?
Either way, they haven’t listed a proper preservative. The only thing that would even be close is the Hydroxyacetophenone which would be a preservative “booster”. They probably just didn’t list their preservative which was incorporated into one of the surfactants.-
@Perry44 They sell all purpose cleaner, soap, shampoo, conditioner, and more. But, it looks like all of their products are not listing a preservative.
Shampoo:
Aqua, Sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate and Cocamide MIPA and Cocamidopropyl betaine, Sodium chloride, Propanediol and Hydroxyacetophenone, Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf oil, Mentha arvensis (peppermint) leaf oil, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, Vegetable glycerin, Panthenol, Silk powder, Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, Alcohol and Aqua and Sucrose cocoate, Decyl glucoside, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, Tocopherol, Citric acid, Aloe barbadensis leaf.
Conditioner:
Aqua, Cetearyl alcohol, Behentrimonium methosulfate, Cetrimonium chloride, Cetyl alcohol, Stearyl alcohol, Glycol stearate, Propanediol and Hydroxyacetophenone, Vegetable glycerin, Hydrolized vegetable protein, Rosmarinus Officinalis (rosemary) leaf Oil, Mentha arvensis (peppermint) Leaf Oil, Panthenol, Silk Powder, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, Vitamin E, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf, Camellia sinensis leaf extract, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil and Ascorbyl palmitate and BHT (green tea extract), Citric Acid.

That’s one of those things small start-ups do. When they get bigger and get legitimate regulatory people involved in the production and sale, they’ll start listing their preservatives (if they have any).
This is exactly the reason I recommend to consumers that they should stick to buying products from bigger companies. They are just safer. This isn’t to say small company products are unsafe, some are and some aren’t. But for a consumer, they should err on the side of caution.

I completely agree about buying from larger companies. When I can no longer make my stuff, I’m going to buy from BIG companies, since I’ve learned so much about the 💩 so many small businesses do.

This is a LAUNDRY DETERGENT. Sorry for not mentioning it.
ALSO, they list “cocamidopropyl”, but do NOT finish the full surfactant’s name.

They are possibly relying on the Propanediol and Hydroxyacetophenone which is claimed to be a “multifunctional” ingredient (not preservative ) that “guards formulations against biodegradation and spoilage”
I doubt this would be sufficiently preserved. I haven’t used this ingredient but most of these types of multifunctional ingredients have limited application.

Neither/both will not preserve.
To Perry’s point such small/startup brands not only screw up out of ignorance (a generous interpretation of these formulas), they can forget to add things like preservatives (e.g.https://www.drunkelephant.com/voluntaryrecall.html) and certainly can’t be relied upon to establish safety in formulation or ingredients.

Asked ’em on facebook - right they said propanediol and hydroxyacetophenone.
