  • Is 1% of water ok without preservatives?

Posted by Story on May 3, 2023 at 2:10 pm

I recently watched a video/class on incorporating water based extracts into oil based serums. They used only 1% of water, the extract and a solubilizer, then they incorporated that into the oil-serum. They said a preservative wasn’t necessary because it’s not enough water to grow micro-organisms.

I just want to verify this statement. Is it true?

    Thank you. 🙂

        Do you make the extract?

        What is extract quality?

To your question - you’re apparently producing a water in oil emulsion. You need to control the micro quality of the water (extract) in emulsion. The % is not that relevant.

In my case I want to use honey. Since honey is not oil soluble, I dissolved it in 1% of water, added a solubilizer, then incorporated into a sugar and oil scrub. I’m keeping the sample for 3 months to see if any micro-organism grows and testing it periodically.

1% honey in water? That’s not an extract. Why do you think sugar water would not have bugs?
