I had a tried & true hair product that was discontinued long ago. I have been looking for a replacement for this product for some time.  It was a “heat activated” curl spray. The ingredients listed are:

Water, SD Alcohol 40, VA/Crotonates Copolymer, Panthenol, PEG-20, Aminomethyl Propanol, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, Benzophenone-4, Oleth-20.
My question is, which ingredient would make this product heat activated?  Before anyone comes at me, I have researched heat “activated” ingredients but everything I find is for a heat “protectant”. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    that’d be VA/Crotonates Copolymer, a.k.a. Luviset CA 66/Vida-Care VAC
it’s a resin that shrinks on drying, increasing tension on the hair and promoting curl growth; the drying process is greatly accelerated by heat

Thank you so much. Is this product something a non-chemist could possibly recreate?

You’d need to get access to VA/Crotonates Copolymer which may be difficult to get in small quantities. Probably not from BASF but maybe another supplier. https://cosmetics.specialchem.com/inci-ingredients/va-crotonates-copolymer
