    Hi all,

    I need help with formulating a scalp Serum designed to combat dandruff, itchy and dry scalp. I’ve made one before and it wasn’t stable enough so the product split in half. Batch size is 30g. pH is 4.2

    <u style=”background-color: var(-bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(-bb-body-text-color);”>

    Distilled water

    0.3% GLDA
    0.5% Allantoin
    0.5% HydroxyethylCellulose
    4.2% Sodium Lactate (2.5% active)
    Salicylic Acid (2% active)
    3.33% Hexanediol (to dissolve the SA with)
    3% Jojoba Oil
    3% Caprylic/capric triglyceride
    BTMS-50
    Cetyl Alcohol
    1% Phenonip
    Fragrance oil

    I’m not sure what should the ratio of BTMS, Cetyl Alcohol and oil be? to make the formula stable. I also don’t know if I should use BTMS here or another type of emulsifiers (other ones I have are Olivem-1000 & Lecithin)? I could use some help, please.

    You don’t need cationic emulsifiers, oils and fatty alcohols. Keep it as a simple SA spray. Increase glycols (add 20% of propylene glycol and up hexanediol) and add a surfactant (1.5% of asm CAPB for example, or 3% of polysorbate 80) to prevent SA from recrystalysing. Increase sodium lactate to 5%. If you want it sprayable, which in my opinion is easier to apply, then ditch HEC. If SA is not effective in a long run, explore climbazole. It’s realatively easy to find in small quantities. I assume it’s for personal use based on stated quantity but I want to remind that climbazole and SA in this capacity are considered drugs from regulatory standpoint.

      Correct, it’s only for personal use. I think I’ll use Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside instead of CAPB. How much percentage should I add Hexanediol? Should I dissolve the SA with the CCG, Propylene Glycol or Hexanediol?

    You can dissolve it in hot propylene glycol (60C should be enough). Not sure about hexanediol. It might be a bit irritating at high concentration but it’s useful for the preservation system, so check recommended %.
