  • Hydrochloric acid instead of citric acid to adjust SLS powder pH

    The SLS powder that we use has a lot of base. When we neutralize it with citric acid, it creates a lot of foam. <div>

    I saw a YouTube video citric acid+sodium hydroxide reaction and it created bubbles.

    I saw another video hydrochloric acid+sodium hydroxide reaction and it didn’t create any bubble.

    So if i use hydrochloric acid instead of citric acid to reduce SLS powder pH, would it create foam or not?

    0.8% citric acid is needed to reduce pH of 1% SLS powder to 7.

    I am asking this because here hydrochloric acid not available locally to test. I have to import it.

    Bubbles happen probably due to CO2 production. You won’t have the same issue with HCl. Just keep in mind that neutralization is very exothermic, so better use very diluted solutions.

    Are you sure that was NaOH and not baking soda?

    If so, probably because dissolving NaOH heats water a lot. That’s why it is suggested to dissolve it in cold water in ice bath
