  • How to mask the smell of DHA preservative

    Hi everyone,
Does anyone knows how to mask the smell of benzylalcohol, dehydroacetic acid preservative, it smells so medicinal? :) I have added just 0.9g to my surfactants system but the smell is overpowering. If I reduce it what’s other natural alternatives ingredients that I can add? The PH is 6.
Thank you for your time in advance.

Wonder at efficacy of sorbic acid in your app.  pKa of benzoic acid with some surfactants is reportedly  “effectively” increased.  You’ll see it (as Na benzoate) in many shampoos at pH 6 and  7.

@Zara I use DHA in my surfactant based system however I have never noticed a scent maybe because I keep my face as far as possible from it given how many times it spilt on my hand and cause irritation. With that being said I formulate home care products so I use essential oils as my fragrance . I use capryly/capryl glucoside to solubilise the oils.  So no preservative smell at all. Also a little off here but I have noticed with DHA is only ever effective at ph below 6 , below 5.5 is even better and I’ve tested it loads of times.
