  • How to avoid precipitation of colloidal oatmeal in shower oil?

Hi! I’ve made a shower oil with plant oils, 10% of polyglyceryl-4-oleate and 3% colloidal oatmeal, the problem ist just that the colloidal oatmeal separates form the oils after a while. I tried adding 10% of shea butter and it did keep it stable for longer, but it still separates. How can I avoid this (preferably using a cosmos approved ingredient)? All help is appreciated! :)

Colloidal oat is more hydrotropic than lipotropic. It does not want to be there; you have a suspension not a solution. Ever hear of oat oil? The lipid fraction of oats. That will work - expensive though. You may also add a lipophilic colloid with yield value such as silica to your oil to stabilize the suspension, then add the surfactant, oatmeal. Might be ugly though.

Yeah. It’s like saying, I’m adding a little water to my car’s engine oil, why has the motor started making unpleasant noises?

@chemicalmatt thanks a lot for your advice! Yeah, I have oat oil but as you said, it’s pretty pricy.. I don’t really care how it looks it’s just for me. Would it be possible to make an oil gel with something like hydrogenated rapeseed oil? Would that also keep the oatmeal suspended and prevent it from falling to the bottom?
