Does anyone know of a good resource which gives you the chemical reaction by which certain raw materials are made?

Often someone will ask about a raw material and how it is made, but unfortunately as a formulator we often aren’t aware of the process of making raw materials.  Our focus is usually on learning what the raw materials can do, not how to make them.

Anyway, does anyone have a go-to online resource for raw material synthesis questions?

I don’t think anyone has done that yet due to that there are so many different reactions and raw materials involved in cosmetics. For surfactants you can find a lot. e.g. here For new materials (like new silicone derivatives) I suppose the reaction path is partly confidential. Anyway it wouldn’t hurt to know more about the synthesis basics as a cosmetic chemist.

About 80% of the time, Wikipedia has the info.

The key is to get the IUPAC or other chemical name of the material, (usually from the SDS) then google it and put “synthesis” after the name.
