  • Help with defoamer

    Hello
I need some assistance with identifying a defoamer to be used in a personal care formulation. I know Dow Corning has some but I’m not sure if they are suitable for personal care applications. Any ideas?

    Thank you

What type of personal care product are you talking about?  Dow Corning certainly has defoamers that can be used in personal care products.  Try the Xiameter products.

DOW CORNING® Q7-2587, 30% SIMETHICONE EMULSION USP is used to break gas bubbles in the human body. It is generally used in pharma industry.

For personal care you can use Antifoam ACP 1500, it is used in food industry as well.

But as Perry said without knowing the nature of formulation it is not possible to make a precise comment.

Those are some good suggestions, thank you.
That raises another question. Many of these antifoams have been developed for the food industry, is it standard industry practice to accept that as approval to use in cosmetics?

Well it is very simple, anything which the inside of human body can accept without problems then the exterior shouldn’t be a problem at all. They are definitely meant for cosmetics as well wherever they can be used.

There are exceptions to the “If you can eat it you can wear it” rule such as Cinnamon powder being used in lip balm - causes swelling and irritation, see also Chilli’s, but they are few and far between. Food grade antifoams are fine

One observation about Simethicone emulsion, that is sold in capsule form for gas relief. Do not ingest more than the recommended dose. It can have Ahem “Unfortunate results” on the human digestive tract, which leaves it very clean indeed*

*Use your imagination. My wife used to work in a plant where they encapsulated this stuff. One of the compounders got coated in it, didn’t wash his hands properly then ate his lunch. He ended up ingesting way more than the theraputic dose. His colleagues didn’t see him for the rest of the day, but they could hear him.
