  • HELP!!! my hand wash formulation still foaming after rinse

Posted by Wanhebat on February 5, 2021 at 8:41 am

Hi & good day, I need some help especially from all the experts in this forum. Why my hand wash formulation still foaming after rinse?? I had tried numbers of different formulations but the foam still there when I rub my hands after rinse. This is my formulation:

    Water               q.s. to 100%
    NaOH (1M)          0.004%
    EDTA                     0.5%
    SLES (20%)              35%
    CAPB (30%)              8%
    DEA                         4%
    Propylene glycol     3.7%
    Glycerin                 1.3%
    Citric acid         -until pH6
    Phenoxyethanol      0.3%

What else I can change or add to make sure no more foam after rinse?

    Thank you in advance

@Wanhebat a lot of correction can be done, reducing  the level of DEA is the most effective solution for your formulation then no need to use  both glycerin and monopolylene glycol , use just one with  low level.

Thank you for your reply @Fekher.. I will try to reduce DEA and remove glycerin and update the outcome

Hi @Fekher, based on your suggestion, I came up with a numbers of new formulations. Here are the new formulations:

                           Formulation 1    Formulation 2          Formulation 2
    Water               q.s. to 100%       q.s. to 100%             q.s. to 100%
    NaOH (1M)          0.004%               0.004%                     0.004%
    EDTA                     0.5%                   0.5%                         0.5%
    SLES (20%)              40%                    40%                          40%
    CAPB (30%)              6.6%                  6.6%                        6.6%
    DEA                         0.3%                    -                              -
    Propylene glycol     3.6%                   3.6%                         3.6%
    Glycerin                    -                        -                              1%
Citric acid           until pH6            until pH6                until pH6
    Phenoxyethanol      1%                        1%                            1%

All 3 formulations create a acceptable amount of foam. But the main problem is the foam is still there after rinse. Is it cause by high amount of SLES???

@Wanhebat I guess that the amount of CAPB and SLES is acceptable and not too much however make a try reducing SLES or CAPB or both.

I would worry more about your preservative system. 1% of Phenoxyethanol alone is not enough. It is not a broad spectrum preservative (it is good for gram-negative bacteria only)

Noted @Fekher.. Thank you @Paprik… I try to increase on preservative as well

@Fekher, this is the formulations I try today.

                          Formulation 1      Formulation 2          Formulation 2
    Water               q.s. to 100%       q.s. to 100%             q.s. to 100%
    NaOH (1M)          0.004%               0.004%                     0.004%
    EDTA                     0.5%                   0.5%                         0.5%
    SLES (20%)             25.67%               25.67%                    17.12%
    CAPB (30%)            4.25%                 4.25%                       2.83%
    Propylene glycol     3.6%                   3.6%                         3.6%
    Glycerin                    -                        -                              -
Citric acid           until pH6            until pH6                until pH6

Unfortunately even at low concentration of surfactant, it still foaming after rinse.

@Wanhebat actually this formulations have low surfactants concentration so the result is too strange then continue reducing their level untill the the you solve the problem .

@Fekher yup.. Its too low & im worry it may affect the efficiency of this product.. Btw, is it normal after rinse, still got bubble when rub?

@Fekher, I need your opinion. I want to know is it normal if I only add water, SLES and CAPB based on the recent formulation, but its still form bubble when I rub even after I rinsed my hands for 20 seconds? does it mean something wrong with the SLES and CAPB I purchased???? I asked the supplier but she said I have to rinse until no bubbles appear after rinse. When I asked her, I rinsed my hands for 20 secs then she said she have no idea.

Are you sure you definitely have 20% SLES? What does it look like? Is it a paste or a liquid?

@ozgirl yup.. its liquid.. because I purchased 70% SLES (paste) and I diluted  with water to produce 20% SLES solution.

I think so.. I purchased SLES from other supplier and it is much easier to rinse
