  • HDPE containers are shrinking

    Hello,

I am cosmetic formulator for private manufacturer. About 3-4 months ago we started new product - bath oil for atopic skin. Today I received photos of some of the product package, which have shrank on the side. We use the same containers for different products (creams, bodywash) and we didn`t have problems with them, so it is something with the new product. The containers are made from HDPE. Here is the composition of the bath oil, so I hope, you can help me with possible interactions between them.

    35% Castor oil
    5% Avocado oil
    15% CCT
35% Plantapon WW (MIPA Laureth Sulfate, Propylene Glycol, Laureth-4)
    10% Glycerin

I read that it can be because of changes in the pressure inside and outside the bottle. Is it possible or there are chemical reactions too? Any help is welcomed. Thanks in advance.

    Can you share the picture?

Here is a picture. I hope you can see the deformation, but I have to put white boxes to hide the brand. I saw the same distortion in samples of silicones in HDPE bottles, which we have in the lab. I think it is something with the pressure in and outside the bottles.

@Rimbaud16 It could also be an issue with the plasticizer migrating to the bulk. I usually see anhydrous formulations in PET bottles. Could you make a test with PET bottles?

@Rimbaud16 this is exactly what @ketchito describes: HDPE will soften, become less rigid and implode when many oils are stored inside. Castor Oil is notorious here too - just your (bad) luck. Switch to PET or BOPP to get out of this mess as suggested. Those appear to be the “soft touch” PE. If that is the case then there are “soft touch” BOPP bottles out there. BTW, this is especially acute in Chinese-made HDPE containers.
