  • Hand Sanitizer turns white (cloudy)

    Hello Everyone.,
I was making hand sanitizer and upon adding carbopol 980 it turned cloudy. White would describe it better.
Is there a solution towards reversing this?

    Aqua 26.8%
    IPA 70%
    Hydrogen peroxide 1%
    Vegetable Glycerin 2%

    Carbopol 980 0.2%
    TEA ..qs

    TIA

Your formula, sorry to say this, cannot work. The expected result is exactly what you reported. First, the IPA percent is far too high. Secondly, 980 is not the best Carbopol for this by a long way. Even 940 is better. Third, you need to use AMP not TEA.

And no, it cannot be ‘fixed’.

As Belassi has already said, Carbopol 980 will not be soluble in that concentration of IPA.

It would be better in ethanol, but you may still have a problem at that percentage. This is why most commercial hand sanitisers do not have an ethanol or IPA percentage above ~60% - it is challenging to find a stable thickener.

Generally, you will see higher solubility if you were to add your thickener to the water alone, and then add the IPA or ethanol later on after the thickener has been dissolved. However in the case of IPA I think you will still see the thickener precipitating out.

@Belassi curious how does 940 working better than 980?  The only difference is the solvent right?

I don’t know why, I just know that it is, just as I know that Ultrez-21 is much better still. But I can’t obtain any…

Thank you, always a pleasure reading & learning from you. What is AMP?

Thank you. I reduced the IPA % and used Ultrez-21, i have a better product
