  • Hair silicone serum

Posted by Fekher on December 11, 2022 at 11:45 pm

I made hair serum for shining and smoothing based on :

    *Silicone gum (Cyclopentasiloxane and dimethiconol)
    *Cyclopentasiloxane
    *Dimethicone 350

Then I have some adds such as : acido amine keratin, ipm, vit E. Any suggestions for other inputs, Then is there any specific Perfume for silicone because with adding very low level product loose transparency?

@Fekher You could replace some of your silicones with esters and/or mineral oil….else, your serum will cost more than your liver :) Unless cost is not an issue. I don’t recall having issues with fragrances in these type of formulas, check if you’re mixing it properly, or replace the fragrance.

@ketchito actually I tried many perfums and the issue is the same even at level 0.1%.

Try knock-off - put the fragrance into each ingredient (silicones, IPM ..) and see if it gets cloudy.

Also, standard silicones are non-polar. I don’t think it will blend well with IPM (it is medium polarity) … as this will be purely silicone based product, I don’t think you need tocopherol. [Some modified silicones can have some polarity to them, so also careful there.]

@Paprik I did knock off and it is fragrance.
About ipm it is the opposite of said actually it increases the serum transparency.

Best coupler of fragrance oils into silicone gum blends such as this is C12-15 alkyl benzoate, which is miscible with D5 cyclic. Pre-blend then slowly add, should remain clear.

I would remove dimethicone and use some PHENYLTRIMETHICONE if the purpose is for shine.

@Abdullah actually i’am looking for Phenyltrimethicone and I will sure add it when it will be available.
@chemicalmatt  when I added very low level of castor oil even lower then 0.2% the product loose transparency any idea to solve this problem?

@Fekher Castor oil is always tricky due to that lone hydroxyl. You may want to try triethyl citrate to couple with it. TEC is also miscible with D5, albeit very slightly.

for hair serum i use about 30-45 ipp/combine with ipm, 25% D5, and silicone gum blend about 20%, fragrance 2-3% without any cloudy issues, phenyltrimethicone 1-4 %for shine and i will avoid high visco dimethicone, just use 5-50 cps dimethicone unless you want it oily an you hair ( you can add up to 10%)

Just eliminate all polar ingredient like keratin, acid/bases, its will be okay, for natural oil still oke okay up to 5%, just try add little by little under stirring until latest point cloudy happens.³
