There was a discussion concerning diabetic hair loss and a “certain brand of hair products.”

“…uncontrolled diabetes can damage blood vessels and when they happens, the body is unable to transport oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles.”

How true is this?  Is shampoo suppose to deliver these nutrient to the scalp and hair?

The 2nd part of this was the original poster had suggested a  to use a certain brand of styling products to bring moisture back to hair and make it full of luster.  I looked at the brand at it is being sold at target for $4.99-$8.99 for all their whole line.   If a person who is an uncontrolled diabetic and is having hair loss what brand of shampoo/conditioner would they need to at least help?

In theory, it may be yes or no, hair loss is not a diagnostic criteria for Diabetes mellitus or listed as a complication in textbook.

No, eating shampoo doesn’t help you control your blood sugar.

Diabetes comes with a doubling in risk for PAD and that one is associated with hair loss. Combine this with microangiopathy and neuropathy and you’ve got yourself into some trouble… however, I don’t think that hairloss on your calves is the one symptom you’re going to focus on. BTW shampoo certainly doesn’t help. @Pattsi HILARIOUS!

For the record… funny people…I am talking about hair loss on the head not body hair.  Most people shave that.. ;)

@Pattsi — you are really cute with that one.  :D

I hope you know I  mean using the shampoo on a head  as a deliver system to bring back nutrients (etc) to the hair and scalp.  This is some what the inference I got from the person that made the statement.  Mine you the brand product doesn’t make these claims…  To me it is a bit of false advertisement knowing people with diabetes if they are not learned about the subject they purchase something they don’t need.

    @Pharma…. What is pad?

    Thanks everybody :)

No brand of shampoo or conditioner is going to deliver nutrients to the follicles. It’s just a BS marketing story.

    HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa!
I have been reading about hair loss in the diabetic community and it is normally associated with hair loss on the body (legs) and with men.  Again this what I have found not stating there aren’t other sources…  :)

    thanks!!!

Pharma mentioned calves because hair loss associated with PAD usually occurs on lower limps (legs and feet).

@Stanley There is no rigid study demonstrate hair (on the head) loss correlate with DM. There’re concerns expressed in some demographic groups.

Paradoxically, one of the most common factors was just recently described—the metabolic syndrome (i.e., insulin resistance) [4548]. Recently, Nabaie et al. reported a no significant relationship between androgenetic alopecia and insulin resistance in a case-control study; however, others have argued that early androgenetic alopecia is a marker of insulin resistance [4950]. Hence, the association, while plausible, remains open to debate. The most accepted classification/grading system for men is the Norwood-Hamilton classification and the Ludwig scale for women [51].

If your patient concerns about hair (on his/her head) loss, you may prescribe Minoxidil solution.

I hate to beat a dead horse on this subject but this has popped its head again on my radar….

A well known and influential Diabetic group (with celebrity influences)  has it on their website that Diabetes does cause hair loss due to the hair follicle being starved of blood flow etc.  I have done some research on the subject and asked previous on this group if anybody has heard of this or know where they are getting this group maybe getting this information.  I have asked the group for references or documents on the subject and have been ignored.  I am concerned about the misinformation of this because other people are now spreading this as a for the reason why there is hair loss on the head. Nobody knows where the information originated from in this version.  I am thinking this may be in medical magazines versus personal care product sources or studies.  Does anybody know how this may have gotten started or any documentation?

The best place to find such information is doing a Google Scholar search.
