Hi. I made a hair moisturizer. I noticed that it leaves my hair with white flakes when I put it on my hair. I used Glyceryl stearate SE and cetearyl alcohol as emulsifier and stabilizer. I want to know it’s possible it could be the fatty alcohols causing the flakes.

You should share the formula to receive the best advice.

    Water 70%
    Aloe Vera juice 6%
    Avocado butter 4%
    Shea butter 4%
    Macadamia oil 3%
    Grapeseed oil 3%
    Glyceryl stearate SE 5%
    Cetearyl alcohol 3%
    Vitamin e oil 1%
    Euxyl PE 9010 1%

I could be wrong, but I suspect it’s the butters causing the flakes. Try making it with only liquid oils and see if you have the same problem.

@Nicky Did you check the stability of your formula? Since you mention white flakes, it might be the fatty alcohol coming out of the emulsion when in contact with water. Any reason why you use so much fats (oils, butters, etc.) in a cream for hair? That might be pushing your emulsion to the edge, not to mention the aesthetic impact on hair.

When making emulsion you didn’t increase the temperature enough to keep both phases above there melting point so some of your ingredients hasn’t melted property.

Heat your current product to 80°c and homogenize. Then see if the problem is solved.

Could be multiple reasons. Was your hair clean before applying the cream? If not your cream could be interacting negatively with other products on your hair causing the white flakes.
Also it  could be  you didnt melt down your oil phase enough. Also your emulsifier might not be robust enough for that much oils and butters.
