Glycerol and plant extracts: how long do mixed solutions stay good?
I see many vendors selling plant extracts pre-mixed in glycerol as ‘liquid extracts’. Mixed a few batches using powdered licorice and green tea extract and was wondering how long these solutions stay good for without a preservative?
Glycerol really strikes me as an interesting solvent, especially since ethanol can be really smelly.

“Glycerol is a stable preserving agent for botanical extracts that, when utilized in proper concentrations in an extraction solvent base, does not allow inverting or reduction-oxidation of a finished extract’s constituents, even over several years.Both glycerol and ethanol are viable preserving agents. Glycerol is bacteriostatic in its action, and ethanol is bactericidal in its action.”
