Gel Mist
Posted by Sheng on September 18, 2018 at 3:57 amHello, I was wondering if somebody here has any experience in formulating a gel face mist that when sprayed turns into water thin.I have tried formulating a gel like formulation but it seems I am getting the wrong concept.can somebody tell me how should i go about this.thanks.DavidW replied 6 years, 2 months ago 8 Members · 25 Replies -

If it’s a mist it should be “like water” in a bottle, so it doesn’t have to turn into water when it’s sprayed.
-
yes but the product is in gel format but mist type when sprayed.

Well, gels have different viscosity. You can’t spray a viscous gel, so maybe you can just use just a little of gel maker?
-
Again, provide more details. What is the list of ingredients, what performance you would like to achieve, why is it important for a product to be a “gel” not a “liquid” etc.

here is the formulawater qs to 100carbomer 0.40edta 0.10alcohol 60tea 0.15viscosity is slightly viscous but the client want something in gel form.when i tried increasing carbomer, it doesn’t work as i want it to be.benchmark is Gel Mist by Beauty Lab

Getting that effect also depends on the type of sprayer you are using.

Hi Perry,I tried transferring part of the sample into a regular pump and still it worked just how it does on its original packaging.
-
If you posted the ingredient list it would be more helpful to those who could weigh-in.
-
Is that for the STANDARD? I see the proposed Formula. I am looking for the ingredient deck for the original standard.
-
Hi @Microformulation , there is no ingredients on the sample.I’ll post the sample photo for our common reference.thanks.

@Sheng can you provide a link to a bechmark product. I checked their website but didn’t find a mist there. Also, what is the function of this product?
-
I couldn’t find anything about this product online… Ok, lets’ try a different approach. What is the purpose of this product? You said it’s for face but the LOI looks more like a hand sanitiser to me.
-
The most important thing will be the spray bottle.
Conventional atomizers need water-thin formulations to work.
So you’d need a special one that can work with thick formulations. -
@Sheng I would contact the supplier (whom I found online) and ask for an ingredient list. They should be able to provide this.In my experience, looking at the ingredient list at this point is the most effective solution. Oftentimes when you break the ingredient deck down, how the achieved the effect is immediately obvious.

@ngarayeva00 , yes the LOI is lifted from a hand sanitizer formula because that is how i see the product.@Gunther , yes we are looking into the actuator of the spray pump. however, when we tested the product using a regular pump , the product still works as a face mist.@Fekher , final pH is around 6.5.@Microformulation, yes looking at the LOI is the most effective solution. However, the client provided the sample and she got it on INCOS ASIA convention.

@Sheng, 60% of alcohol and no humectants at all. This product will not make a good face mist. It is ok if you want to make it in a gel format, but it should include humectants. This is LOI of one of the best face mists I tried:
AQUA (WATER) | GLYCERIN | BUTYLENE GLYCOL | ZINGIBER OFFICINALE (GINGER) ROOT EXTRACT | CAMELLIA JAPONICA FLOWER EXTRACT | PHENOXYETHANOL | PPG-26-BUTETH-26 | PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL | PARFUM (FRAGRANCE) | DISODIUM EDTA | SODIUM ACETYLATED HYALURONATE | PEG-12 | TOCOPHERYL ACETATE | TROMETHAMINE | ASCORBYL GLUCOSIDE | IL52A
You clearly don’t need all these extracts and fragrances and you can add carbomer to make a gel. But you SHOULD add glycerin and butylene glycol (prefer glyceryn and propanediol). Depending on the budget, you can add hyaluronic acid. Vitamin E and a solubiliser is not a must. -
@ngarayeva001, I’ll try to knock out trial batch tomorrow morning.you’ll be updated as soon as I finish lab trial. ::wink:thanks for the help.

Another reference for you:
PHYLLOSTACHIS BAMBUSOIDES JUICE, ALCOHOL, PEG/PPG-17/6 COPOLYMER, GLYCERIN, BETAINE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, OPUNTIA COCCINELLIFERA FRUIT EXTRACT, GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) SEED EXTRACT, HYDROLYZED PHYLLOSTACHIS BAMBUSOIDES, HYDROLYZED CAMELLIA SINENSIS LEAF, NELUMBO NUCIFERA FLOWER EXTRACT, DIMETHICONE, PEG-5 RAPESEED STEROL, HYDROGENATED POLY(C6- 14 OLEFIN), HYDROGENATED LECITHIN, PEG-75, STEARIC ACID, PALMITIC ACID, BHT, POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE, TROMETHAMINE, PEG-60 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, WATER, DISODIUM EDTA, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, PHENOXYETHANOL, FRAGRANCE
This is a mist by a high end Korean brand. This one also has a lot of not necessary extracts, but as you can see glycerin and butylene is a must for such a product. By the way, don’t forget a chelating agent and a preservative (I didn’t see it in your formula). -
As Perry mentioned, if you get a proper sprayer (for high viscosity) your problem may be solved.
