I’m trying to create a base which will eventually become a vitamin C serum. However I am experiencing a few problems. The gel leaves a shiny visible film on the skin which doesn’t look that appealing. I also noticed a balling effect when rubbed after it dries. This is my second attempt at a gel and it’s a vast improvement over the first batch, but it’s still not where I want it to be. I read online that adding glycerin might remedy some of these problems, and it did to some extent, but I don’t wanna go over 5 % as that might cause stickiness. Perhaps adding oil at a very low % will help?

    distilled water                93 %
    glycerin                          5 %
    hydroxyethylcellulose      1 %
    microkill COS                 1 %

Also at what time would it be appropriate to add the preservative? Before or after hydration? I’m worried that if I add the preservative after hydration it won’t be completely dispersed.

I’m very new to formulating so I appreciate any input. Cheers!
