  • Fragrance tweaks involving preloading porous silica with fragrance & volatility.

As I put the final wrapping and bow on an emulsified cream deodorant, in my pursuit of extraordinary excellence, I want to try and incorporate one more olfactory pleasure.  I have asked once before about preloading porous silica (aka silica shells) with highly volatile ingredients in an effort to keep them from absorbing lipids in the emulsion, rendering them ineffective once they reach the skin, but no one chose to jump in on that topic.

So, I am looking at the same topic…but with a different twist.  Instead of preloading porous silica with D5, making it presumably available to absorb lipids/sebum once applied to the skin, and the D5 volatilizes off.  This time, I want to consider preloading porous silica with fragrance oil.  In my mind, I am conjuring the idea that I can create a reservoir of FO, which over time will volatilize at preferably a different rate than the FO that was added to the product in a traditional method.  So, for clarity I intend on using the FO as both a traditional add-in, and also adding a silica that is FO impregnated to the same formula.

So, I guess what I am asking, will this method slow the volatilization of the FO, thereby extending the availability of the fragrance?  Or, will the fragrance volatilize out of the spongy silica structure just as quickly as it would the emulsion?  I should say, I already have 12 hours of fragrance presence with the current formula.  I am just trying to get a full 24 hours out of the fragrance, so as to match the product performance.

In my vivid imagination, once the silica becomes devoid of FO, then it joins forces with the distarch phosphate and MCC in helping create surface area for expedited sweat evaporation.

I would like to publicly thank Vitaly and Pharma for your assistance in this venture.  You guys have been invaluable, making the journey an absolute pleasure and adventure.  I hope I have not caused strife at home…filling your medicine cabinets with enumerable samples. :)

    Aloha
