  • Formulating for different hair types-any tips?

    Hi,

I’m working on shampoo and conditioner bars for fine hair, curly hair, and dry hair.

Some things I’ve come across and wondering if they’re correct?

    for fine hair:
-less btms or other waxy conditioners, less emollients and more Cationic polymers instead. Would silicones also be ideal for fine hair?

    -hydrolyzed rice protein for volume.
    For dry hair:
    -more btms and emollients

    For curly hair:
-polyquaternium 10, is that the preferred polyquat for curly hair?

-focus more on silicones and Cationic polymers for conditioning so it doesn’t weigh down curls?
Really would appreciate any tips you have for formulating for different hair types. Any ingredients you’d prefer working with or certain ingredients you’d exclude for the different types would be so helpful. Thank you!

Hi, I am happy to share snaps of my study text -

Just a note, Dry hair is a condition in my opinion, not a type of hair.
It’s possibly damaged and needs to be repaired - proteins, polyquats, etc …

Hope this helps a bit :)

I find that all personal care products are subjective. You will have people with straight hair who will prefer the product for those with curly and vice versa. My recommendation is to (1) define your definitions and solutions for these hair products knowing they may later be challenged, and lastly (2) ask your friends what they prefer in their products and curate it around that. There is no one size fits all, or right/wrong for hair care preferences.

AND due to this, I would recommend removing the hair-type and just naming LOW vs HIGH moisture. This removes the complexity and bias for hair types, and allows people to choose based on preference.
