Formulating a concealer pt 2 - Using a rock tumbler and ensuring optimal powder+oil mixing, advice?
On the recommendation of Bobzchemist I got a Lorotone rock tumbler and 100 1/2″ stainless steel bearings to reduce the particle size of the powders and blend them together, both to ensure better consistency and coverage.
But I’m unsure of the required tumbling time and of the next step: How do you best blend the powders into the oil phase?
Any advice for making a good, thick, concealer that will cover acne or otherwise red skin? I hear adding green oxide can help? Recipe originally had french green clay which added a significant amount of green, but was very hard to formulate with.Current formula: Hemp Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Beeswax, Zinc Oxide, Boron Nitride, Shea Butter, Propylene Glycol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Green Tea Extract, Yellow Oxide, Brown Oxide.

You will need a dispersant for those iron oxide pigments, my friend. I don’t see one.listed.

What natural ones are available? Ball milling all the minerals together not enough?

It’s a nightmare milling pigments and colour matching. Why not go for pre-dispersed pre-blended - Creasperse do a nice range eg Light Fair Beige CP208 or Creasperse AF Medium Date Brown CP209.

I was trying to make a formula without Titanium Dioxide to target the “natural” skincare market, do you happen to know the minimum order quantity for e.g. creasperse?

Why wouldn’t Titanium Dioxide work in the natural market? It’s a big part of mineral makeups.

Well, there’s a subset of it that frowns upon it, but It’s probably not important. More label beautification than anything, although I’ve been experimenting with boron nitride.

So I have Creasperse samples, but I don’t know how to formulate with them, how much to use etc, has anyone got a concealer formula using it? All I see is typical usage level 1 - 10%

search google patents for information on using said products.. it takes time and patience and lots of reading (and a modicum of space on you PC for saving articles of import), but having zero background in chemistry (save what i learned in HS and college) I am comfortable reading through patents and substituting/experimenting with formulations that seem applicable to my task..
i formulate solely for myself, and color cosmetics are my current labor of love.. Unfortunately for me, the Creasperse people’s response to my inquiry was less than helpful.. They told me that they are unable to ship samples to the USA and I am not flush enough to invest in the minimum quantity for a “maybe this will work” type of item..Good luck with the samples and let us know how you made out, please..
