  • Foaming surface on shampoo formulation

    Hello,

I have been trying the following shampoo formulation:

    3% Coco-glucoside (and) Glyceryl Oleate

5% Sodium Lauroyl Oat amino acids

    5% Cocomidopropyl Betaine

    20% PEG-80/SORBITAN LAURATE/SODIUM TRIDECETH SULFATE/COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE/DISODIUM LAUROAMPHODIACETATE/PEG-150 DISTEARATE/SODIUM LAURETH-13 CARBOXYLATE/QUATERNIUM-15

    20% Rose Hydrosol

    water to 100%

I think the Sodium Lauroyl Oat Amino acids basically serves the same function as the Cocamidopropyl Betaine, so I’m my current batch I’m just using 10% Cocamidopropyl Betaine.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome. When mixed at first, it is uniformly white and has a consistency like retail shampoo. After a day or two, it clarifies and a foamy layer appears on top.

My question is: does this count as separation? I don’t like the aesthetic of it in general, but I’m not sure if its due to mixing or separation, or something else entirely?

Thank you for any comments or suggestions.

From the picture you showed, it actually looks like foam, but after few days, that foam should have ceased already. Could you put your sample in the oven for few hours, to kill the foam and see if there’s actually a top layer of separated product in your bottle?

The foam has mostly subsided after a few days. Thank you. I wasn’t aware that putting samples in the oven could help accelerate the foam dispersion process, what temperature is recommended for this?

You can also spray some alcohol over it and it will kill the foam.

I have tried this before with soap. Does the alcohol just evaporate or could it have some effect on the formulation?

i think it relates to surface tension

I’d put it in the oven (37°C) for an hour or so. Do not excede this time since some components are temperatura sensitive. If you have a bath with ultrasound, even better.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner. Thanks for the tip.
