  • Face wash formula failed. Please help

Guys, I really need your help with this. I have been making this face wash for quite a while. I recently changed it slightly by adding hydrolysed wheat protein. I have just found it like this:

Viscosity raised and there are some threads in it. No change of odour preserved properly. I don’t have any cationic ingredients in it either. pH when formulated was 5.2, tried to change it now but my pH meter is $%%%t. pH strips show it’s still around 5, so no drastic change of pH. Speaking about viscosity it was designed to be water-thin because it’s for foaming bottle.
    Formula:

    INCI %
    Aqua 78.10%
    PEG-7 Glyceryl
    Cocoate
    0.7%
    Cocamidopropyl
    Hydroxysultaine
    8.0%
    Sodium Cocoyl
    Glutamate
    4.0%
    Sodium Lauroyl
    Methyl Isethionate
    5.0%
    Oat Amino
    Acids
    2.0%
    PEG-50 Shea
    Butter
    2.0%
    Diazolidinyl Urea (and) Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate.

    Germall Powder

    0.2%
    Citric Acid qs

Thank you for your input in advance.

My first thought was that hydroxysultaine changes charge at acidic pH, but it never happened before. All surfactant products I have ever made contain some amphoteric surfactant and all of them are < pH 7…

How long did it take before you noticed the threads?   Are they threads or crystals? (do they break or stretch?)

They stretch. It happened today, this bottle sits in my bathroom and I use it twice a day. It was ok in the morning. There were no significant changes of temperature.

    My guess would be mold.

While you might have a suitable preservative system in there, that isn’t a guarantee of preservation.  As they said in Jurassic Park - “Life finds a way”

Thank you @Perry. I would be happy if it’s just mold. I was topping up this bottle many times instead of sterilising it properly. I have much lower standards when the product is for me rather than for someone else. I don’t sell any of my products but I make them for friends and family. This foam is particularly popular so I was worried. One of my friends has leftovers of that foam (same formula minus wheat protein) that I gave her 8 months ago. I also found the one with proteins made in July. All crystal clear. I am very careful with what I give to others. I make acid peels, retinol moisturizer, hydroquinone spot treatment for myself but won’t give it to anyone else. Same goes with water in oil products. Have been working on foundations for a while but they separate. So if it’s just mold and there’s nothing obviously wrong with the formula, it’s good. I need to invest in microbial plates for home use.
P.S. Jurassic Park was my favorite movie when I was a kid :)
