Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating General ethyl alcohol in a chemical peel.

  • ethyl alcohol in a chemical peel.

A 10% Salicylic Acid peel ingredients are listed as:

    Medical Grade Salicylic Acid (10%)
    Propylene Glycol
    Denatured Ethyl Alcohol

If I’m making my own with Salicylic acid powder and propylene glycol can I use just distilled water or if I dilute it to say 4% in an oil like rosehip or evening primrose to keep on overnight? I wouldn’t be storing it, as I’d be using it as soon as I made or later in the day before bed.

You shouldn’t use Salicylic acid at a level higher than 2%.

    Please review the safety information.

And pH should not be lower than 3 unless it’s a concentrated professional peel done by a dermatologist. SA at 10% would be much lower.

I have used 20% Salicylic acid peel before and I have had no issues my skin is not damaged.

I understand you are trying to “protect” your profession which you probably earn a living from.

Yes I can buffer it. So it’s okay to use distilled water instead of ethyl alcohol?

Many years ago when I was a teenager and lived in ‘the old country’ there was that concoction sold in pharmacies. It contained nothing else but ethyl alcohol and salicylic acid. Some outrageous amount of salicylic acid (probably closer to 20%). I still have a couple of post acne spots from that stuff. Even hydroquinone can’t fix it. We used it because we didn’t have anything else. There are plenty of effective anti acne ingredients, starting from zinc pca and niacinamide (for minor issues) to 2% SA toners (without alcohol) to benzyl peroxide and tretinion. There’s absolutely no need in over-drying skin.

Just because you can buy something on Amazon doesn’t mean it’s safe. And just because you used it before and haven’t been harmed doesn’t mean the next time you won’t harm yourself.

And no, you can’t use water instead of ethyl alcohol. Salicylic acid is not particularly soluble in water.

Am I to understand correctly @Bluewoodg that you intend to apply a 20% SA Peel and will leave it on your skin overnight?

Wart removers are made with 15% SA … Peels are designed to be left on the skin for 20 minutes maximum and then neutralized and rinsed off.

Well if someone wants to make SA bomb at least dissolve it in PG. Not amazing at this concentration but at least better than alcohol.

Holy cow, you really thought I’m leaving 20% acid on my skin overnight, my comment is written in words so you have the ability to read through it multiple time, please re-read my comment through multiple times.

There is no need to call it a bomb, 10% solution and it readily available to amazon and the reviews are highly positive, I have used high concentrations before and my skin in fine. I know what I’m doing, and will be diluting it, I appreciate you “concern” I only asked if I could used it in water instead of Ethyl alcohol.

And I dissolve it in propyl glycol to make a paste, are you have I should add my % of that paste to more propyl glycol instead of ethyl alchohol, or add my % of Salicylic powder to PG And discard the 3rd ingredient so it’s salycilc acid powder mixed with PG?

Thank you for your concern, I really appreciate it. I’m going to use 2% salycilc acid on my skin as I would dilute the 10% if I bought it off amazon, since it’s not water soluble I could add my salycilc acid/PG paste to an oil then?

That’s why I want to remove the alcohol and I’m not using 20% salicylic acid.
