  • Effect of co surfactant on silicone deposition from shampoo

    This is one of my formulas <div>

    14% SLES

    2% CAPB

    0.2% GHPTC

    0.375% amodimethicone in micro emulsion

    1.5% NACL

    pH 6.

    It worked well.

    I made a sample with 2% cocamide MEA instead of CAPB and everyone(more than 10 people ) who used it liked it much more than the one with CAPB for hair conditioning after just one use. Specially for dry hair touch and feel.

    As I don’t have the tools to measure the amount of silicone or GHPTC deposited in hair, i am asking

    2. How does co surfactant effect deposition of GHPTC and silicone on hair? Increases it or decreases it? Specially CAPB vs cocamide MEA?


    Why do you think everyone likes the shampoo with cocamide MEA much better than CAPB?( Specially for dry hair touch and feel?)

    The co-surfactant for sure impacts coacervate deposition and hence, oils deposition (like silicones). Now, without quantifying silicone deposition, it’s not possible to know if there was an improvement with one or the other material. Since CAPB improves the detergency of anionic surfactants more than Cocamide MEA, what your panel might be experiencing is a more pleasant sensation from the formula with Cocamide MEA due to less detergency.

      I have made of several versions of SLES CAPB. 8:2, 10:2, 12:2, 14:2 SLES: CAPB and with different amounts of silicone micro emulsion, 0.2-0.5%. but they don’t fell as good. With higher amounts of silicone hair feel oily but doesn’t feel as good as the one with MEA.

    Cocamide MEA has some refatting properties so this may be what your testers prefer rather than any difference in silicone deposition.
