@ketchito - agreed.  On the plus side, consumers are not really that good at telling differences so matching performance isn’t really necessary if you have other aspects of the aesthetics right (fragrance, appearance, packaging)

Hi there just a comment on adding the Colloidal Oatmeal - I just weigh out and add this in the oil phase ingredients (it doesnt dissolve but it doesnt turn gloopy or clump like it can if you add to water phase). It might not be right technically but it works for me and is easily incorporated when you emulsify the phases. I also add EDTA to the Water phase (much cheaper for me that Sodium Phytate if cost is an issue).

@ketchito Is that patented by p&g?

If yes, do you know which patent it is so i can have a look.

@Abdullah There are actually many patents issued by P&G around the same SH backbone, with few changes. Try using Google patents, and write:  procter shampoo lamellar. You’ll see many entries.

I like any of the three to the left

@PhilGeis Thank you for the advice. I was thinking of choosing Saligerm G-2 but I ended up going with 1% Jeecide AA instead. I didn’t like the idea of FA donors in a leave-on product that would be used at least twice daily.

@Squinny Thanks for the tip! In my most recent batches, I start by dispersing it in 10% of the water (instead of the original 20%) and letting it mix while I start on the rest of the formula. In the cooldown phase around 55C I add it in and homogenize for 15 minutes. Thankfully it seems to be fully dispersed and I haven’t had any issues with clumping.

Stumbling upon this a few years down the line…thank you for such a useful and detailed discussion!

Did the Jeecide AA work for you, or did it cause skin issues? I’ve found benzyl alcohol to be rather sensitising at 1 %, so wondering if it would be ok on eczematous skin.

    Thanks!

I don’t see Jeecide AA or its INCI mentioned here.

To answer your question I did not use it. I ended up taking @Abdullah‘s suggestion of phenoxyethanol + parabens + EDTA. I didn’t have any issue with this blend as far as sensitization or preservative failure.

I have had to go to the emergency room due to my eczema and allergic reactions. Initially I made my skin much worse with essential oils and other ingredients. Then I remembered that I had hydrolyzed oats. I made a simple hyaluronic serum with glycerine, water, sodium hyaluronate, and 10% oats (you don’t need this much but I was desperate). I still could not sleep longer than a few hours at a time but before making this I could not sleep at all. OTC oat products did not work. Sometimes chemists don’t always make the best products on the market for many reasons like profit over people, bad management, etc. The chemists themselves might be great but there are various skill levels. I work in healthcare and one of the doctors forgot basic life saving skills because he does boutique patients (money over care). Also, I find sometimes creativity and science aren’t always a perfect match up. I come on here after long breaks because the value of the brilliant scientists is priceless but the bad attitudes you might come across are hard to take. Keep trying. I’ve made close to 6,000 sales with a 4.8 star rating. Small beans but keep up your spirit. Learn the science because you already have the creativity down. If you land on a final formula, let me know because I am also making a similar product. Its made for a different market than yours so I won’t be copy catting 😛

That sounds like quite the ordeal you had to go through. I’m glad to hear you found something that works for you.

This formula is for personal use only and has remained pretty similar to what I posted earlier.
