I want to use chitosan as a penetration enhancer, does anyone have experience with this cationic polymer? My intention is to dissolve it in a solution of sodium lactate and water. I am aiming for pH 5.

First, I want to experiment with some cheap chitosan powder I found on ebay; it’s described as:

“Specification: Chitosan Powder 90% D.A.C.(bulk density is 0.3)”
The idea is to include this in a lotion, with polawax as the emulsifier. I’m also wondering if anyone is aware of any incompatibilities between chitosan and preservatives?

Also does anyone know if citric acid would work better than sodium lactate? Also is sodium tripolyphosphate be required to activate the chitosan?

oh and this is for experimental purposes only, not going to sell this or anything. In fact I’ve decided to investigate chitosan as a preservative, or moisturizer instead of as a penetration enhancer.
