    Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone can help me because I am out of options and have searched the internet and couldn’t find answers to my questions. I’m currently working on a hair oil for my brand and I’m trying to incorporate dimethicone 1000 with my oil blend, however, the moment I mix them all together it becomes opaque and very thick. I’m trying to achieve a hair oil like we see with the big brands, where it’s silky smooth and transparent, I hate the fact that it’s opaque. Here is my mixture, please advise me on how I can achieve a beautiful silky smooth oil that’s transparent. I don’t mind adding new ingredients or changing the recipe.

    For a 15ml sample :

    7ml dimethicone 1000
    2 ml argan oil
    2 ml olive oil
    1 ml almond oil
    1 ml coconut oil
    1 ml castor oil
    0.5 ml vitamin E
    0.5 fragrance oil

I hope you will be able to help me, thank you all so much

@SarahOlivera I’d start by replacing Dimethicone 1000 by a lighter version (50 cst or less), which is usually more compatible. I’d advice you to check the compatibility charts for similar silicones:

Hi, I am not quite familiar with this type of products, but I am using two hair oils from Pantene and LOreal, so as far as I know they contain mainly volatile silicones. Dimethicone 1000 is quite thick and should be upleasant in this type of formulations.

Is it a wash off or leave on product?
If it’s leave on, the formula is … not good.
You are basically putting heavy oil into your hair. What’s gonna happen? The hair will become greasy and heavy.

The majority of your product should be volatiles lipids.
    Up to 100% volatile lipid
    Up to 20% non-volatile lipid
You can use some silicone gum or polymer if viscosity is desired.
Oil soluble actives can be also added.

Try to formulate without fragrance first. Or add oils slowly and see when it becomes opaque. Some of your oils can be contaminated or so.
