  • Different mol.weight of HA in one product?

    Posted by kot on November 25, 2019 at 12:57 am

    Hello. ?Wondering if anyone can answer this.

    In hyaluronic acid serum with 3 different molecular weight of hyaluronic acid (HA), how much of each kind of HA can be used ?

    Is it 1% of each, or is it - using some %%-ge of each kind to make total of 1% in finished product?

    Thank you very much in advance.?

    What is your reasoning for using the hyaluronic acid? What do you want it to do?

    In my opinion, you can use as much or as little of each kind as you want. There will be no measurable difference if you use 1% of each or cumulatively up to 1%.  It’s unlikely you’ll be able to measure any difference or certainly notice any performance difference whatever ratio you use.

    According to the research I’ve seen, you would get just as much moisturizing benefit from using mostly glycerin and then putting a drop of HA in your formula for claims purposes.

    This discussion about hyaluronic acid vs glycerin might be interesting to you.

    @kot:

    The total amount of HA you will be able to add is going to be limited by the molecular weight of the various hyaluronic acids you are using.  If it is a SLMW then there is virtually no upper limit.  If it is a mid-range to high mw HA, then it will form a solid gel at somewhere between 1% and 2%.

     Thank you to both of you @MarkBroussard and @Perry.
    @Perry, but you’d not make a serum from glycerin due to its stickiness, plus it is less appealing. ;)
    @MarkBroussard so, the limit is applied just because of thickness of the gel?

    Well, properly formulated you can make a glycerin containing serum that isn’t sticky.
