Deodorant , triethyl citrate or deoplex ?
Posted by Cdsgames on February 7, 2023 at 5:27 amHi ,
we are formulating a new deodorant. We chose tea tree oil as antibiotic and some antioxidants. For the odor masking/changing we are trying to decide between TEC and Deoplex. Can anyone tell us what works better ? Can we use both ?
Thx for your time
ps. pH of product is 4.8

As far as I understand, TEC inhibits the breakdown of sweat to malodorous substances, while deoplex does not inhibit the breakdown but neutralises the malodourous substances by converting them in salt that does not smell.
I do not know which one is more efficient, but I would prefer TEC mechanism, to prevent the production of smelly substances in the first place.

I would recommend that you used both. To have an effective product, you’ll want to include multiple deodorant actives that attack the issue from various angles.

I am thinking to use about 3% of TEC and 1% of Deoplex. Any advise ?

Achh, those enzymes are blotchy, too pH dependent for my taste. I’ll recommend triethyl citrate and ethylhexylglycerin (Sensiva SC-50 or clone) at 1.0% each and a really nice fragrance at 1.0% also. No worries about pH or chemical coordination there either.

Schulke used to have a specific ingredient for use in deodorants, I think it was PA 50. Not sure if that is still available post-acquistion by Ashland.

I haven’t worked with Deoplex but can confirm that a combination of TEC and Ethylhexylglycerin works well. ????

I second that….I use TEC/EHG plus other things….and it is awesome. Granted I use a higher rate of TEC than I am seeing mentioned….and why not….such an awesome emollient.

ok another question…I am using a derivative of vitamin C in this deodorant . To my nose it makes a big difference but I am unable to find any research showing antioxidants reduces BO. Does anyone know of any research showing a link between the two ?

Hi I have been using TEC and Ethyhexylglycerin in my Spray Deo and love it. I have just been looking up ingredients from MYSKINRECIPES and they have a product called CycloSorb™ Clear (Water-Soluble) INCI Name : Alpha Cyclodextrin, Gamma Cyclodextrin, Hydroxypropyl Beta Cyclodextrin. I was wondering if any other have used this and if so what are your thoughts - before I buy any to try. I am making a Water soluble deo spray (they also have one that is for a Cream called CycloSorb™ Cream (Non Water-Soluble) in case anyone is interested.

Any of the ingredients with that….it will try and devour your fragrance. 🙂 If your deo is unscented…I like the idea. If scented…hmmn…not as much.

Yes I just thought it interesting and I really dont care if deo in unscented (I currently use some essential oils - but if I can get away without using any and therefore Polysorbate 20 etc then I would be happier with my product I reckon - All I really want to do it stop the odor (mine works great for my partner but I am not totally happy with it for myself - so thought this product may be more suitable for women? I use nice smelling lotions and an essential oil mix roller perfume (not for underarms) for light scents - but nota fan of strongly perfumed products anyway.

Hi @Graillotion I ended up buying some Cyclosorb from our Thai place and made my first test deo spray yesterday - have only used for yesterday and today but so far it is great - will update you on how it goes after a few weeks to see if any irritation issues - but so far no problems and no odor! It is also much cheaper to make than my previous dep spray. Cheers

Define ‘great’. Great at what? What is the formula doing now, better, that it wasn’t doing before.
Is the formula scented? And what bearing did it play on the added scent?
Aloha, @Squinny
I would not expect it to be an irritant. 🙂
I have looked (on paper) at the type of ingredient….for a long time.

@Graillotion - Great IMHO. So many ways to answer so little time 🙂 Early stages but I love my new product so far and happy with the formulation I had worked on taking into account what I liked about the previous formulation etc. Not giving away too many secrets much like you and your Deo. It is unscented which is what I wanted for a Deo. I just thought I’d let you know in case you wanted to get some to play with if you order more products from MSR. Cheers

Almost the maximum level use of TEC in many references is 5%.
Can not be used at 10% or more in dedorant and will be more efficient then 5%?

What about colloidal silver on deodorant? Also does zinc ricinoleate work on a pH 4.5?
