Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating Colloidal oatmeal in a transparent body wash

  • Colloidal oatmeal in a transparent body wash

    Hello everyone,
    I am looking forward to participating in your forum!

    I am formulating a body wash and would like to include colloidal oatmeal.  The problem of course is getting the clarity desired for the product.  There are perfectly clear, oatmeal containing surfactant products available  on the market, does anyone know how to achieve this?

    Thank you!

    @jpgrace:

    Can you provide links to a couple of the commercial products you are referring to as containing Oatmeal and being transparent.

    Colloidal Oatmeal, at any appreciable quantity, will not produce a transparent product.  Perhaps they are using Oat Beta Glucan?  If the post the link or LOI of those products, then it should be apparent.

    Could also be Hyrolyzed Oat Protein which is water soluble and provides a noticeable foam boost!

    Dr Bob,
    Thank you for that suggestion, a protein with foam boosting is exactly what I need, was just trying to avoid the expense. But ultimately you are right, will have to go with protein.
    Thank you again!

    Mark,
    Well now I cannot find any and am thinking that I made a really foolish mistake!  Somehow, I just assumed there had to be a technique or solvent that I wasn’t aware of.  Thank you so much for your advice and saving me hours of work.

    I don’t believe there are any clear products that contain oatmeal protein.
    Colloidal oatmeal requires a minimum yield value to stay suspended (yes I have tried it). As a result of my annoyance with colloidal oatmeal I hydrolysed it with NaOH and that gives a product (after neutralising) that doesn’t require a viscous medium and looks the same colour (beige) as oatmeal.

    Thank you Belassi! That will be extremely helpful for a cream type body wash.  You guys are a wealth of information!
