  • Choosing right silica for suspension

    Hi all,

I’m currently trying to suspend exfoliating beads made of hydrogenated jojoba oil in a mixture of 70% propanediol/ 30% magnesium sulfate. Ideally I would like the viscosity of my product to be very low, therefore I cannot rely on high viscosity to maintain the beads suspended. In order to get a high yield value, I would like to use silica in my formula.

Given that propanediol is a polar solvent, would it be right to start experimenting with hydrophobic silicas? Evonik has a study online on the suspension of glitter in oil and they recommend hydrophobic Aerosils for polar oils, but I’m not sure if this would apply to propanediol.

Thanks in advance for your insights

Try it and see. Also check with Cabot for their fumed silica products.
