CBD oil color stability - any history?
I have formulated to commercial success several CBD products now for topical personal care, and neither RT nor ACC studies exhibit any uncharacteristic discoloration due to oxidation. However, I wonder if any of y’all have observed any oxidative stability issues given the wide variety of raw source material of cannabidiol in use. I’ve seen color of CBD raw material range from straw to root beer. I am using broad-spectrum material only. Discuss.

Are you talking about the ISOLATE or the Distillate? The Isolate is a white to off white powder and the distillate is the amber/straw color. Make sure you the COA’s and such, I am also in CBD development and haven’t seen color change yet in my products.

So we have used both isolate and broad spectrum distillate (looks like a resin) in a various formulations. I haven’t seen the raw materials themselves change color, but once they are in solution we are noticing color change, I would say more so in the case of broad spectrum. We make premixes of the distillate into caprylic/capric triglycerides for ease of use and I’ve seen colors ranging from pink/purple to a dark amber. Might have more to do with whatever metal contaminants we have than from cannabinoids themselves?
I made some 500mg/70g products with isolate and they turned a nice little pink in our accelerated stability ( w e do run one chamber extra high at 50C and this was where it was most noticeable)

I’ve never had any issues with CBD products changing color … but, I only use one source for CBD full spectrum and isolate. The CBD full spectrum obviously varies a little lot-by-lot, but not appreciably.

Not related to formulations, but what’s the legal status of CBD products? I thought they are regulated by the USDA and there is no final approval.

Due to polyphenols interacting with UV light, your products DEFINITELY will/ can turn pink with light exposure.
