CBD containing facial cleanser
Hi all!
I’ve had a customer ask for a facial cleanser however I am very limited as to what ingredients I can use. I’ve posted one of my formulations below however my main issue is my inability to solubilize the low oil phase into water. I’m concerned I’ve missed something very basic and that explains my issues so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Oil Phase
Miglyol 812N (MCT) 0.5%
Cannabidiol 0.1%
Water phase
Glycerine 2%
Phenoxyethanol 0.8%
PEG-40 HCO 2%
Polysorbate-20 2%
Softigen 767 (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) 10%

One of the problems I think I have is to do with HLB value of my oil phase. The HLB for MCT is quoted as around 11 while the HLB values for PEG-40 HCO and Polysorbate-20 are 14 and 16 respectively. Is my issue that the solubilisers I have chosen have too high a HLB value?
I know that my preservative system is very weak here and I am looking to alter it shortly to include Chlorophenesin which I believe should strengthen it enough.

The real question is: Why would you put a very expensive ingredient like CBD into a rinse-off product that will simply wash away all of the CBD before it can absorb into the dermis?
Regarless, try PolySugaMulse D9 as your solublizer or combine it with the PEG-40HCO.

You might consider a two-component system. The cleanser without CBD and a small vial of CBD in a separate companion container.
The use instructions would be: “Gently massage cleanser onto face. Open container of CBD, pour down the drain. Rinse face with water.
Why don’t you try using a water-soluble CBD? You won’t get a high load of CBD, but in a cleanser it’s not really going to matter, but it would make your formulation easier.
