  • Carbopol Hardened - Anyway to Return to Powdery Form ?

    Hi all,

I bought a packet of Carbopol late last year and used it to make hair gel. The gel turns out great and I really love this ingredient. However, I didnt realise that Carbopol actually absorb moisture from the air and needs to be stored in air-tight containers with silica gel. I stored the powder in a non air-tight plastic container and didn’t use it subsequently for 2 months. Few days ago, I wanted to make another batch of hair gel and was shocked to see that the powder has shrank to become a heap of solid mass. I reckon the high humidity here in Singapore has contributed to that.

I tried scrapping the hardened mass to get some of that powder off and make another small batch of hair gel. But it didnt turn out good as it was not able to turn into a Clear gel after adding TEA, as opposed to the first batch which yielded a clear gel.  I’m not sure why this is so, maybe somehow the hardened powder has a different density than the dry powder ?

So, my question to the experts here, is there anyway to convert the hardened mass to the original dry powdery form ?

    Thanking in advance !

    Rgds,
    Ivan

IF you have an oven and a KitchenAid Mixer, spread it out on a steel baking sheet, roast at 200F for an hour or so then break it up in batches with the mixer with the dough kneading attachment. You should be able to break it up enough to add & wet out in water alone with added time on the Lightnin’ mixer, plus a tiny bit of acid added to the water. Hope this helps.
