Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides VS Squalane?

  • Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides VS Squalane?

Posted by Zink on December 6, 2016 at 6:46 pm

I’m working on a concealer formula, currently using both at about the same %, I’m wondering if they are interchangeable?

Is one likely better than the other? Price isn’t a factor ATM.

Squalane is supposed to be the most rapidly absorbed lipid. If rapid absorption is what you’re after, I’d use all squalane.

I made a facial oil with a blend of Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides and Squalane (and some other oils) with great results. My initial formula was based only on Squalane but due to cost I replaced some of the Squalane with Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides with no major changes to the product.

Try making one batch with all Squalane and one with all Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides and see if there are any noticeable difference.

Personally, I’d be looking for maximum rapid absorption into skin. Squalene may be the fastest lipid, but also look at synthetics like DIA, Tricaprylin, etc.

I will test all squalane vs all caprylic/capric, i wonder if there are any theoretical benefits of the latter over the former though.

The problem with synthetics is that they’re often not available “over the counter” and if you end up using several of them, the MOQs can be prohibitive to new, initially small scale formulas.

Will let you know what I learn.
